The rate depends on the state: Florida 70 cents per $100 of consideration, Washington a graduated excise tax starting at 1.1%, New York $2 per $500 plus a 1% tax on homes of $1 million or more paid by the buyer, North Carolina $1 per $500 paid by the seller, Virginia's grantor tax 50 cents per $500, and California's county tax 55 cents per $500 where the county adopts it. Cities and counties may add their own.
