Connecticut · Property taxConnecticut property tax: the town sets the installments, then a one-month grace and 18% interest
In Connecticut, each municipality's legislative body decides, when it approves the budget, whether property tax is due in a single installment, two semiannual installments or four quarterly installments, and designates the due dates; the last installment must fall due at least forty-five days before the end of the fiscal year (C.G.S. §12-142). The tax collector advertises the due dates and the delinquency dates in advance and again before delinquency (§12-145). An installment not paid in full on or before the same date of the month following the due date is delinquent and bears interest from the original due date (§12-146). Delinquent principal bears interest at eighteen percent a year, each fraction of a month counted as a whole month, with a two-dollar minimum per installment that a municipality may vote not to impose (§12-146). For a closing, the town tax collector's bill and the installment schedule determine the proration.
