Alabama · Ala. Code §§6-5-247–6-5-252Alabama right of redemption after foreclosure: 180 days or a year, and the 10-day possession demand
After an Alabama execution, judgment or foreclosure sale, the debtor, the mortgagor, junior mortgagees, judgment creditors, transferees, the spouses on the day of sale, and children, heirs or devisees may redeem – within 180 days of the sale for a residence on which a homestead exemption was claimed that tax year, and within one year for all other property (Ala. Code §6-5-248(a)–(b)). For such a homestead, the mortgagee mails the mortgagor a redemption notice by certified mail at least 30 days before the sale, and the redemption period doesn't start until that notice is given – but never runs past one year after the sale (§6-5-248(h)). The right can't be waived in the mortgage (§6-5-250). The debtor or mortgagor in possession must give up possession within 10 days after the purchaser's written demand, or forfeits the right to redeem (§6-5-251), and a purchaser who doesn't give a written itemized statement of lawful charges within 10 days of a redeeming party's demand forfeits compensation for improvements (§6-5-252).
